Researchers on our team lead high-impact projects that lead to development of free AI-powered software for scientists and strong publications at high-profile computing conferences and journals. Our researchers have the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from other scientists and engineers across AI2. Our team is committed to all aspects of open science, including developing and sharing open source software, and are encouraged to collaborate freely with other researchers both internally in AI2 and externally at other institutions. Our office has close ties and unique access to researchers at the University of Washington, only 1.5 miles away.
We strongly encourage applications from women, underrepresented, and minoritized candidates, individuals with disabilities, and covered veterans. We are particularly interested in candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the diverse values of our team at AI2.

Yes, we have several application deadlines each year in October, January, and July. We begin reviewing applications immediately after the deadline has passed. If you missed one of these dates, please apply and we will consider your application along with others at the next deadline. We encourage you to apply on-time as open positions may fill up over time. If this does not work with your job search timeline, please reach out to [email protected] and we'll do our best to accommodate.
1. Application Screening. After the application deadline, our team collectively performs a round of application screening.
2. Phone Interview. We reach out to select candidates for phone interviews during which we learn more about the candidate's research background & interests and how Semantic Scholar Research fits in with their career goals. We also share details and answer questions about what it's like to join our research team, Semantic Scholar and AI2.
3. Letters of Recommendation. Optional for Interns. For most roles, we may request candidates to provide the names and emails of 2 contacts for letters of recommendation. We will reach out directly to ask for these letters, though we encourage candidates to ensure their contacts know to expect these requests ahead of time.
4. Technical Interview. Optional for Postdocs & Research Scientists. Most candidates will be asked to complete a take-home coding exercise. We ask candidates to tell us a preferred date & time they'd be available to receive the assignment, and to allocate 4 hours to complete & return the assignment. Most candidates do not need the full amount of time. We've designed several assignments to cover a range of topics (e.g. machine learning, web app prototyping, data science) and ask candidates to select their preferred problem. We may waive this interview for candidates who have demonstrated technical capabilities elsewhere (e.g. significant contribution to open source software).
5. Job Talk. Optional. Required for Postdocs & Scientists. We invite many candidates to give a 1-hour job talk. Candidates should prepare for 45 minutes of speaking content and 15 minutes of questions and discussion, which can be throughout the talk and/or reserved for the end. Job talks are open for all AI2 employees to join and will be recorded for those who cannot make the live talk. Candidates should specify if they'd prefer a limited audience for their talk (e.g. keeping their job search confidential).
6. 1-1 Interviews. After considering recommendation letters, technical interview results and job talk feedback, we will invite select candidates back for 1-1 interviews with researchers from Semantic Scholar Research and possibly engineers from Semantic Scholar and/or researchers from other teams at AI2. Post-doc and scientist candidates typically have six or seven meetings, while pre-doctoral and Intern candidates typically have three or fewer meetings.
7. Offer. After reviewing feedback from the 1-1 interviews, our team collectively decides on whether to proceed with an offer.
We do our best to work with each candidate's timeline. Typically, we begin reaching out to candidates to schedule phone screens within a couple weeks after the application deadline. We reach out immediately after phone screens to schedule job talks and coding screens, which often take place within a few weeks. Subsequent interview stages can take anywhere between a few weeks to a couple months depending on the candidate's and interviewers' schedules.
Yes, we welcome candidates to re-apply with their updated CV. Especially for Research Interns or Predoctoral Young Investigator positions, hiring decisions are not solely determined by the candidate's experience but also our team's capacity for mentorship at that point in time. We encourage candidates to reach out to potential mentors to see when they would be most available (e.g. applying for a Spring or Fall internship instead of Summer).
Yes, we approve any form of remote-work on a case-by-case basis. For working remotely from a non-US location, there are also additional considerations. We use Remote.com for hiring non-US teammates; please note that Remote.com is not available in every country. Please mention any relocation or remote work constraints you may have during the application process, and we will do our best to work with you to figure out a solution!
